About 3 litres IN TOTAL ... that includes tea and coffee and the small amounts in food. It varies somewhat with body weight but a little more than necessary does no harm.
VERY much more than 3 litres may start to dilute essential salts and other things. If you often find yourself getting thirsty for no reason, see a doctor. It's one symptom of diabetes.

according to a health survey, you should drink at least 2-4 cups a day. Your body will be in shape, and drinking water can actually help you lose calories.
If you drink 8 cups, you lose an AVG of about 85 calories.

The old recommendation about 8 glasses a day is obsolete. Drink enough to quench your thirst. You don't need any more than that.

8 glasses a day, each about 8 ounces, if you drink like 3 gallons a day though, you can actually lose weight, but you will pee a lot! LOL
