I've now got my mum's and my uncle's slides which I want to put onto CD or in a file on the computer. Can I do it myself using an ordinary scanner? (which does photos, documents etc.) or do I have to buy a special scanner to attach to my computer to do this? I found one answer that has a slide scanner which you attach to your digital camera. But I don't have one of those cameras. Many thanks for your help. I am a bit concerned that if I sent them all away through a Photo place something might happen to all those precious memories of my mum and my uncle - who are now deceased. Many thanks Mary.

My scanner (Epson Perfection 3490) came with a special gizmo that lets me scan slides or negatives into my computer so I can put them on CDs. I wouldn't try to use the "ordinary" scanner, you need the light to come all the way through the slide. Check to see if your scanner came with an attachment or if one is available for you to buy.

sure. you will come across scanners with slide adapters... and there additionally are scanners which will vehicle-feed the slides. frequently those that vehicle-feed slides are costly. I had a scanner with the suited decrease back mild and a fixture to hold as much as 5 slides in at a time for scanning. It became one which I have been given loose with purchase of a working laptop or computer! in spite of the indisputable fact that it did no longer paintings for long... that's extra fee-effective so which you would be able to pay a provider to test the slides than to get a self-feeding scanner. Hand feeding 5 at a time may well be very annoying.

You'll get the best results from a proper slide and film scanner; they're more expensive than regular flatbed scanners, but you might be able to rent one. Some flatbed scanners come with a slide holder that backlights them; if you already have one like that (or can borrow one), give it a try and see if the results are good enough.

There are accessories that will lay on the bed of a 'ordinary' scanner, but you will get the best results from a scanner designed to digitize slides.
