A black cat crossing your path has long been considered a sign of bad luck. I believe that this superstition originated from the days of witch paranoia, when witches were supposed to have kept an animal as a 'familiar'. Apparently black cats were supposed to be the most common familiar.
Don't fall for it though. Even if witches did sometimes keep black cats, that doesn't really have anything to with your 'luck'. My family has a black cat too, and my luck has been pretty good all my life nonetheless.

It gets to the other side of my path. Other than that nothing unless I stop to pet or scratch it.

I'll bend down, call to it & give it a pat. That will nullify any hint of superstition attached to it.
