i ran into an engine sitting on the ground (it was dark) now i have a huge knot, and my foot seems to be swelling.

The only way to know for sure is to get an X-ray.

Only way to be sure is an X-ray. Severe soft tissue damage can sometimes look as bad if not worse than a break. have it checked as either that causes swelling or visible deformity can comprimise blood flow in the foot and can cause loss of the extremity.

it will swell up & turn blueish in color. Hurt to stand on foot
