I think it is the latter. They are obligated to lie because they have to convince us they are perfect and bullshi##ing is the only way.
If they told us the truth, we would never vote for them. Yet, we are supposed to act shocked when they do something like adultery or granting government contracts to all those buddies that gave them campaign money.
When you have to get millions just to be known, that is when the corruption starts.
I can't name an honest politician, because honestly, I don't know any of them personally.
