We have a 1993 Chevy Cavalier RS,automatic its in good shape, has high milage, good on gas, runs clean, just had fuel filter changed, new muffler and tail pipe. We do an oil change every 3000 miles as we do most intown driving and never go on the interstate. My husband usually puts high octane gas in , and there seems to be no leaks any where? We have owned it 4 years and it runs like a charm and still looks good. We would appreciate any ideas as the mechanic cant figure it out? Thanks All.

first do not put in high octane, its not needed cars are made to detonate with recommend fuel. maybe the fuel filter is not all the way on or if its carburated, leaky fuel line, bad fuel injectior. Just start the car and pop the hood the smell around till you find something. Maybe its old, some old cars just have that smell, the car it self could be running rich cuz the gas used.

At the gas stations people over fill their cars and spill a little on the ground. The next guy comes along and walks right in it. It's on your shoes and when you get in your car, it wipes off on the mats or carpet on the driverside or even the passenger side. When it gets warm in there or you turn on the heater it atomizes and brings the smell alive. A little goes a long ways and is very nauseating. If you can't see any apparent leaks...smell where your feet have been.

Hahaha your mechanic screwed up the connections on the fuel filter, if it started when he did it. Have him redo the banjo connections with teflon tape. The gas evaporates quick so its hard to spot a leak.
