He shot himself.

I wonder that myself. Yes, he used heroin and probably other drugs, yes he had a history of low moods and yes he was under tremendous pressure, but with a precious daughter and genuinely loving fans concerned about him, I have a hard time thinking he gave up and killed himself. There is a lot of strong evidence that he was not alone when he died, that the amount of heroin in his system would have rendered him incapable of manipulating a shotgun to kill himself and other things that are inconsistent with a suicide. I guess though we'll never know the truth until the End of Time when the Truth of everything will be revealed.

I heard that they think it might have been murder, but drugs and drinking is the perfect atmosphere for one to take his own life, in a depressed state.
