Your audio files must be in the Mp3 format. Any audio CD can be converted to an Mp3.
Using Nero Express is easy to use and just one of the various programs available.
You then add your Mp3's into your iTunes Library and then transfer them to tour iPod.

Personally I hate iPods, but when friends ask me to put music on it for them, I just load the songs into iTunes and them import them into the iPod. It is a backwards and labor-intensive way, but all MP3s can go onto an iPod via that method.

the great thing about itunes is that it also converts music files so they'll be able to play on your ipod. all you do is first add all the songs to itunes, and the ones that arent ipod compatible, right click and go to convert, then theyll be ready for your ipod.
