oil painting, can you start with a pencil drawing first on the canvas, then paint over it? tatoos are started that way arnt they? well, i just wanted to know if that is possible.i drew somthing on my daughters door last year and then painted it, and it turned out beautiful.now she has a lil cayon on it , but thats another story.

Definitely, you can start with a drawing. Many painters don't, they use a brush entirely --unless, like, say, Jackson Pollack, they just lay their canvas on the floor and dribble paint over it, or they smear it on with a spatula or squeeze it on the canvas directly from the tube. Some people paint over a photograph! well, you need guidelines, or else, how are you going to paint freehand
i did that once, they are good but my drawings are distorted a little

they use some conte crayon or a light color pencil
then they add the tones and then the details

it is really simple
the last thing you want to do is adding detail
