Ok that's a BIG question. Very quick overview of what's in the core rules from .the current edition.
Races:
Humans are the normal from which the other races diverge.
Dwarves are tough, gruff warriors with crafting bonuses.
Elves are agile, somewhat fragile and long lived
Halflings are small, agile and sneaky.
Gnomes are small and tough with minor magic abilities.
Half Elves are part elf and part human. They share some elven bonuses with a bit of human flexibility.
Half Orcs are outcasts known for their strength and savagery
Classes:
Barbarians: tough warriors with the ability to rage in battle
Bards: performers with magical talent and wide knowledge
Clerics: servants of the gods gifted with magic, often for healing
Druids: servants of nature who can use their magic to command natural forces and even transform into animals
Fighters: the masters of a wide variety of combat techniques
Monks: mystical masters of hand to hand combat
Paladins: holy warriors
Rangers: wilderness warriors with tracking and survival abilities
Rogues: masters of stealth and subterfuge, highly skilled
Sorcerors: they posses innate powers of magic
Wizards: wider powers than a sorceror but generally less powerful.
There are numerous other races and classes in various supplements. for more information, I'd suggest the Wizards website particularly the forums.

To expand on another person's answer, yes it is a role-playing game. You create a character, and then you "become" them within the game. Within the group there is a DM (dungeon master), also called a GM (game master) or storyteller. They decide the rules of the game, and can also call a halt or a break if people are going too far on it. They also keep the peace if needs be, set what scenario the players are going to be playing in, and create a storyline. Their job is also to play all of the NPC's (non-player characters, like store owners or cab drivers). It's a game that some say is Satanic, but I don't see how. Role-playing games are a lot of fun, and a great way to vent some creativity!

"In the core rules available races are dwarf, elf, gnome, halfling, half-orc, half-elf, or human and available classes are barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, or wizard, though many others of each are available from different supplements."
Check my source for links to more information about each of the above races and/or classes.
