find something that's supposed to make someone feel either like a man, or like a woman (makeup or shaving cream commercials, maybe?)

the implicit/explicit thing means they either say it or imply it.

I take this question more as what makes an advertisement feel ("invokes notion") masculine or feminine. Could be the product itself as mentioned in the previous answers, but there's more to it than that. Would you try to sell men's cologne using a pink color palette with lots of pretty flowers and curly q's? Typically, no. Other things invoke the notion, including what I've just mentioned, color palette and shapes, but also typeography, over-all messaging and style.

Think of Axe, that's a good example of very masculine advertising. Take away the product in the commercial, and ask yourself 'how would I know this is for a guy?'

I just read more answers and now I'm adding to this.
Everyone seems to be answering from the point of view of consumer and how it makes a person feel, (is it/am I masculine or feminine?) I'm looking at it from the advertiser's point of view in 'how does advertising get the consumer to feel (invoke) masculine or feminine'. Guess it depends on what you need the question answered for whatever you're doing... if you're in some sort of advertising/design class you might want to think twice about what I've written, or if it's for some kind of gender or sexism debate that's a whole different path (think 'Mama's Got the Clorox', d@#^ I hate that messaging!!)

Good luck.

It means some sort of commercial, billboard or ad that particularly defines a show of masculinity or femininity. For example a beer commercial, sometimes shows a strong rugged man getting a beautiful girl, it invokes a notion that drinking beer makes you a "manly man" and gets you a nice girl to boot.

Like those stupid commercials that gear a certain product to a man or a woman, but not both. There's one for a cleaning product, I forget which, where the announcer says words to the effect: "We gave these women this cleaning product and asked them their opinion..." So why did the announcer mention "women" as though only women could gauge a cleaning product's worth. Why not have both men and women, and have the announcer say, "We gave these men and women..." So there are still old-fashioned advertising methods out there. I think that's what is meant by your question: the notion of sexism. Hope this helps.

Choose an advertisement from a recent newspaper or magazine that suggests masculinity or femininity. In those advertisements, find examples of masculinity and femininity that are obvious (implicit), and not so obvious (explicit).

Masculinity=anything that is associated or has to do with men. male gender roles or behaviors.
Masculinity is sometimes used as a synonym for manhood.

Femininity=anything that is associated or has to do with women, their gender roles or behaviors.

hope that helps!!
