A walkoff homerun is when a player hits a home run that wins the ballgame for the team. It has to occur in the bottom of an inning (can be the 9th or extra innings if the game is tied after the 9th). If you look back to last week, Magglio Ordonez had a "walk off" home run when he hit a hr in the bottom of the ninth against the A's. They won the game on his one swing.

The name "walkoff" means exactly what happens--the home run is hit in the bottom of the 9th or subsequent extra innings and resolves the final game score. Since no one else needs to come to bat after that, as the home run hitter is rounding the bases, the visiting team walks off, obviously dejected, from the field. In any given season, there are usually 20-30 walkoff home runs.
Some off the most dramatic moments in baseball came from walkoff home runs, like Bobby Thomson's in 1951, Bill Mazeroski's in 1960 and of course Ordonez' shot this week.
And BTW, the term "walkoff" can also apply to any other play that ends with the winning run scoring in the bottom of the 9th or later, like the Bill Buckner error in 1986. There are even "walkoff" walks-- when a batter walks with a tie score and bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th.

A walk off homer comes in the bottom of the ninth inning and puts the home team ahead in the last at bats of the game so the game ends with the home run and the team walks off the feild, hence the name walk off homerun. A regular home run occurs at any point in the game.

The walkoff homer ends the game because the other team does'nt have another 3 outs (at bat). It's the team that bats in the second half of the inning that benefits from a walkoff homer.

A walk off home run is a home run in the bottom of the 9th or later inning that ends the game with the winning move ahead run. I believe "walk off home run" comes from the other team walking off the field because the game is over.
