My new born gets hiccups several times per day. The pediatrician says its normal. I tried giving him water but he won't even take it. Besides the literature indicates that unless they experience dehydration babies almost never need/drink water.

My son got the hiccups several times- at least 3 times a day a few months before he was born, and even after. Our doctors also said it was normal. Eventually it will go away, occassionally he will get hiccups here and there, but not nearly as much as he did in my belly or within the first few weeks after birth. Don't worry, he will be okay!

It scares me to think that some of you are parents based on your answers above. There are some good ones, but come on! Babies get hiccups. And the poster above who said that hiccups are because of gastric reflux obviously has never had hiccups. The only thing I can suggest is to feed your baby when he gets them. The natural swallowing will relieve them.

Hiccups are not an indication of a disease or a bad event....just the diaphragm doing excercises.

That's what works for me.

Babies get hiccups. It's normal. They get them even before they're born. And they won't have hiccups so much later, when their tummies don't have to be so full and their nervous systems mature a bit.

A baby who fusses with hiccups is likely experiencing gastric reflux.

But a baby with hiccups who is otherwise happy needs no treatment at all. It really doesn't bother them much.

And, no, you're not supposed to give an infant water.

Yes, my twins had the hiccups a lot when they were born. It was sad they had to have them all the time. The only thing I can think of as to why they get hiccups so much is because their mouth was always open, crying or screaming.

Also, they would sleep with their mouths open. My twins always slept on their backs in their crib so it is more likely their mouth will be open taking in air.

I too gave them water and they would push it away, but I was persistent. You can also try Gripe Water.

Hope this helps you.... :-)

It is normal for a baby to hiccup, the baby was hiccuping in your tummy! Unless the baby shows signs of discomfort while hiccuping, dont worry about it.

If you already talked to your pediatrician and were told that it is normal, relax. Congratulations on your new baby!!!

Babies get hiccups - there's nothing you do to deal with it because it isn't a problem. It doesn't bother babies to get hiccups, so just try to ignore it.

A 3 week old should NOT have water. (See link below.)

The hiccups are honestly probably more upsetting to you than to him.

Sometimes nursing would help my babies get rid of hiccups.

Please dont scare it :) We have a 11 week old and he has hicups every so often, there is not much you can do, but they dont like to lie down when they have it, we cuddle ours and rub his back till its gone and yes almost no baby needs water if it gets breast milk or formula. Also if you can get gripe water its good for smaal tummy aches and small hiccups.

Thats true, for the first little while, they dont really need water just moms milk or formula. For hiccups though, its called GRIPE WATER. It kinda smells dilly and is a clear liquid. It should get rid of them right away. Hopefully this helps.
