The answer to that one is no. I waitressed for 20 plus years. Tipping is a privlige that you the customer gives for the server for great service. it is a way of saying "thank you" for your time and making our meal excellent. I have gone out to restaurants where I refuse to tip the server. If they forget about me or forget to refill my water or do not pre-bus...do not ask how the meal is...they just dump the food and go...forget it.

The way I see eating out is that is your money..the waitress is counting on your tip to make her living. If you have received excellent service and you want to tip good, tip what you feel is appropriate, then also lay down a penny.

A penny represents excellent service.

Tipping is not a must and its quite general. We wouldn't know where does the tips go to even if we tip. I know that many companies has different ways to manage their tips. Some tips goes to the company, while some are shared with all the staff at the end of the month and lastly to the individual staff. Therefore if you receive poor service, you don't have to tip. So that the company will know and improve their service as a whole. Hope this will actually answer your question and doubt.

Sorry if the poor service came from my waiter/waitress then NO, that's there job, I'm there to relax and eat a good meal with good company, If I run out of my drink, or they drop my food off then don't come back for ever and I need steak sauce or something it sucks and if it continues all night, so I don't tip, if they tried there best then they will get the best tip ever, they have to at least try COME ON its there JOB.

Even if I receive poor service, I still tip, just less. Bad service usually 5-10%, depending on how bad it was.

It's common courtsey. I would if the waiter or waitress actually made an effort to be friendly but accidently screwed up. At least they were trying. But if they aren't friendly then I wouldn't, at least not a generous tip. Also, it's good to turn to customer service. Often they give gift certificates if you've had a bad experience.

I am not sure I would leave nothing but if service was poor then tip should be poor. Surely they did some things right.

The tip should reflect the service.

Nope. I usually lower the amount if they aren't good, but if it is just completely poor service no tip.

The rule of thumb for BAD service is to, throw a penny in ur glass of water. There is nothing more insulting then that. Trust me, ur waiter/waitress WILL get the picture.
