I threw an a/c belt last week, did not replace it as I think the compressor has froze up. I did however replace the fan belt and since then there is a loud rattling noise when I start and shut off the engine. Otherwise it seems to run OK. Others have told me it is the water pump bearing getting ready to go. I thought if a pump bearing such as this were bad it would leak first. It doesn't. Could it be bad with no leak?

Great, now I'm worried about the timing chain. And even though it starts and runs well I suppose that could be it. I'll change the water pump first, then see.

I can tell you from personal experience that the rattling is probably coming from inside the engine. the 3.9 had a timing chain problem that allowed the tensioners/followers to become a little worn out and allow the timing chain to rattle a little bit. it is quite a job. book calls for a 6+ hour job. You have to remove the timing cover and other items to get to it. I just let mine go and listened to the noise. If it doesn't get any worse, you may be ok. However, in rare cases, the motor will go without any notice because of the timing chain breaking.

A water pump bearing can go out without the pump leaking first.

sound like your water pump ready to go, it will not leak because your rubber seal are in good condition by the time it leak you will be broken down some where.
