God made the earth/heavens in six days and rested on the seventh, or the sabbath day. Per some of the ancient 'calendars' used, a full day was the time between meals, so there were only about three of our days for one of their weeks! Some of the 'calendars' used in the times of Jesus, put the sabbath on our Saturday, which would mean that Sunday is the first day of the week. However, as others have pointed out, Monday is frequently considered the first day of our current week, as we (as a society) define a typicaly work-week, with the "weekend" (Saturday & Sunday) following. Who knows what 'tomorrow' will bring!

It's Sunday. I work on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, then Wednesday is off, Thursday I have something to do, Friday and Saturday are normally off for me. As I start working on Sunday, it's the first day of the week for me.
