Since I currently have both an '88 Ranger and a '90 Ranger (both manual and 4 X 4), I just went outside and looked at them. If you are going with the older style CB (about the size of an in-dash radio or slightly bigger), there are basically 4 places I saw in which a CB could be readily mounted. The reasons I am only considering this type of CB are that they are bigger and therefore harder to find a place for, and I have heard that they are still better quality, if you get a decent unit. First, you could mount it to the headliner, which might be difficult to do, depending on what kind of bracketry is available behind the headliner to mount to. This would probably be the most convenient location to use once it is installed. Second, you could mount it to the top of the dashboard. This would be easier to do, because you wouldn't need to worry about puncturing the roof and letting in rain. This would be slightly less convenient once the unit is installed because the cord would probably hang down in front of your radio and heater controls and make a nuisance of itself. Third, (if you have bucket seats and no console, or are willing to cut into the console) you could mount it standing up between the front seats. This would probably be an inconvenient location to use while driving, since you would have to look away from the road if you needed to use the CB, and I wouldn't recommend this placement. Fourth, if you don't mind not having music you could install an in-dash unit in place of your radio. Personally this would drive me nuts because I love listening to music as I drive, but if it doesn't bother you, it would make for a cleaner looking installation. In summary, I would probably look at the roof-mounting first because then I wouldn't have to move the cord whenever I wanted to mess with the radio or the heat/air controls (I had a vehicle at one time where I did mount the CB to the top of the dash, and everything worked OK, but the cord did get annoying after a while). The only thing you might have to worry about is moving the rear view mirror slightly if the CB interferes with the view. If this just won't work out, then I would mount it on top the dash. These are only my suggestions, however. It's your truck, so you can really put it wherever you want. I hope this helps.

Install a floor mount bracket(so the radio stands up while mounted just in front of the seat),and have a radio and mike that have channel control on both.Thats what I did when I had my 88 RANGER SXT extended cab 4x4 stick with a 2.9 v-6 .

I found that the best place in my F-150 was overhead.
Since your Ranger is smaller, I doubt you will find enough room elsewhere. You could go with one of the new tiny ones, or a remote mount with controls on the mic. I prefer my old Cobra 29 LTD with D-104. You can't use a power mic with some of the new small stuff.

i had an 84 ranger standard shift and i mounted mine on the pieces of dash that gives you access to the fuses right over the gas pedal with it mounted up towards the top of the piece of trim i had plenty of room for my leg and since that piece comes off easily made installing it a snap i ran the wires thru the cover and sucured them around the steering cover

you can get the hand held version that mounts on a dash or windshield. that would be easier then installing a unit. they cost about the same as a low-middle end version
