While there are a lot of possible answers, the most likely "right" answer is at the time of the Declaration of Independence from England: July 4, 1776. Subtract 2006 - 1776, and you've got your answer.

when the Declaration of Independence was signed Americans were free from British rule (the colonies become an independent nation, but the Brits werent about to let that happen.) you could consider that the start of American freedom.

after the war was over, the US Constitution was drafted. this is when the first 10, the most important amendments came to be. why are they the most important? today, the other 17 amendments tell the government what it can do. the first 10 tell it what it CANT do. those 10 amendments are our beloved Bill of Rights. you can consider that the start of American freedom also.

but the Bill of Rights didnt apply to all...blacks were exempt. it wasnt until 1864, when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation admist the Civil War, in an attempt to further cripple a economically weakened and agriculturally dependant South. however, three states, Missouri, Kentucky, and the newly founded West Virginia (seceded from Virginia when Virginia seceded from the Union) werent affected by the law. the 13th amendment shortly afterward freed the slaves. you can consider this the start of American freedom, seeing as there were no slaves left in America.

You people are deluded.

We aren't free. We have to pay. If you don't pay your taxes then you lose your car, your home and if you don't have any of that crap you lose your freedom and go to jail.

We ain't free sweetie.
