The song was written for the Montgomery Ward Company in the late 1940's for their Christmas sales ads (they were a department store chain).
Always hated that %^$%^$%^$ song, since the day it came out, too cutesy. I always figured his nose was the result of "nose paint" (alcohol).

Because he found out that he was a Doe. The males shed their antlers from Sept-early Dec. The females shed their antlers in January. If you notice, all of Santa's reindeer have antlers.

because if it was blue the people would be asking if he was cold. If it was green they'd be asking if he needed a tissue and Red just stands out more so that he can guide the sled on a foggy night.

He doesn't have nostrils and when he was born he got a nosebleed, therefore it filled up with blood and stayed red his whole life. Thats why in the movie he sounds all congested.
