If I cover one nostril, I can breathe sufficiently. If I cover the other, then I have a very difficult time breathing.

The weirdest thing is that the blockage alternates nostrils. I don't think I have allergies, I tried nasonex but it doesn't help any more than without it. Should I get my adenoids removed? What other options? What gives???

As long as the blockage alternate or you have a deviated septum, what you are describing sounds normal. Throughout the day, the nose changes the dominant nostril..one opens, other closes. This is normal. Some of us, given allergies and other things, notice this more than other people may. But no one has both nostrils open fully at the same time all the time. I only know this because I had the same concern and asked my sister/doctor. So don't worry about it, it's totally normal.

No surgery. You need to try just plain saline nasal spray, store brand or make your own. 10% water to 1% salt and it is good for 3 days in the fridge or use it as you make it. You probably do have allergies, just mildly and not bad enough to be on a lot of meds yet. Just try the saline. If your heat has been on this year you may need to put a pan of water over the heat vent or buy a humidifier to use in your bedroom at night. Dry, hot air, especially will cause that too. So, that's all I can come up with right now. Good luck, hope you're breathing well soon.

It's normal to be breathing from either one nostril or the other. Your system automatically "switches sides" several times a day. If you consistently breathe from both nostrils it can cause your sinuses to dry out.
