You form the sodium salt of acetylsalicylic acid and make it much more water soluble. You could also make the compound more nucleophilic and react the sodium salt with an alkyl halide to form an ester.

It depends on how much you add.

First there will be neutralization to form the sodium salt. If you add more, and heat it, then the acetyl group will be hydrolysed and you will have acetate ion and salicylate ion. If you add more NaOH the phenolic group of the salicyate ion will be dissociated, to form a di sodium salicylic acid salt.
