The PSAT is just a way to get a scholarship. Colleges will only look at your SAT scores, not PSAT scores, when they are considering your acceptance into their school.

The PSAT is for practice for the SAT. The PSAT also tests for eligibility in the National Merit Scholarship program.

It's important for the purpose of awarding high scorers on the SAT. In order to receive a Nation Merit Scholarship, one must score highly on the PSAT and then do well on the SATs to assure the score was not a fluke. Without the PSATs, fluke SAT scores could mean scholarships for undeserving students.

It can give you the chance to get more scholarships if you qualify for becoming a National Merit Scholar. It's also good practice for the SATs.
