You still have to pay for play. The same way you do on the 360. You've just been misinformed. The 360's internet is only free for chatting and uploading gamerscores and for downloading demos. Playing online still costs. So yes, it will cost on the original Xbox.

No is not free it will never be. Microsoft loves ripping people off for giving them a crappy online gaming service
