Because yahoo doesnt want to ""offend"" any of the people who in real life have been beat with the UGLY/FUGLY stick a few to many times!! ha!!

the reason the avatars are attractive is because no one would choose the ugly ones anyway, but i dont think thats the answer you were looking for.
