Polls and surveys are difficult to vote on, because they ask for opinions, but it must be done. Make your decision for best answer based on how you feel about the answer, not on what other's think of it. Pick the one that actually answers the question, and the one you think has the most relevant information.

On other questions, very few people actually offer sound unbiased answers or list sources. These few are the ones that get my vote.

polls and surveys are preferences, so really it's a moot point.
on every other answer - I don't go with the most thumbs up unless the answer fits the question the best - in my opinion of course.

To be honest, I don't even look at the ratings. I asked the question for other people's opinions, and not their opinions of other people's answers. I asked the question, I get to choose which answer is the most sincere, detailed, funny, correct, or helpful to my answer.

when i just cant pick the best answer i do go for how many thumbs up they have....but then again, my questions usually get some pretty unique responses, and i pick the one that makes the most sense or makes me laugh the most.

No, because some people give thumbs up or down to those they like or dislike, and this is unfair, and childish, I think hard about the sincerity and thoughtfulness in their answer.

Almost never. Unless the answer is exceptional. Most are 3 or 4 stars depending on the depth and the feeling the answer give me.

I don't worry about the thumbs. I look at the content of the answer and if that person actually exerted some effort in giving me an honest and knowledgeable answer.

If the choices are very similar, I might.

But I generally go by the detail given, the care with which the person put together the answer, style, etc.
