A hard news story is one that will be around for awhile, and possibly will be contiually brought up or bring about some sort of controversy.. One example would be 9/11. I need some other examples though, because we are not allowed to use 9/11. If anyone has any thoughts or examples of hard news stories, it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

A "hard" news story is a straightforward -- facts and nothing but the facts -- report on any kind of event, situation, occurence. It does NOT necessarily have to be controversial (natural disasters aren't although the extent of damage from a natural disaster might be, for example, Hurricane Katrina) and it does NOT have to be continually brought up (like Sept. 11, 2001, or the tsunami in southeast Asia).
It could be a local fire or car accident or a world-shaking event like North Korea testing its first nuclear bomb.
Every day it seems as if there is something in the newspaper about the ongoing war in Iraq.
Interim elections are coming up in the United States.
The United Nations just approved a new secretary general.
Nobel Prizes are being awarded left, right and center for a variety of endeavors -- the most recent (I think) being the Peace Prize.
All that is "hard" news.
