I understand exactly what youre saying since I used to work for a phone company and fiber was a new and tremendous thing. Our companies have sent the fiber jobs out of the country or most of them so maybe now our fiber optic wire is too expensive? I dont know but its a good question.

I work for charter and we use fiber , also known as glass cable in out systems, fiber is very very exp, most systems operate and a combo system using fiber nodes amps and les, les are the same things as amps but with no trunks , or splits after them, in a typical system you will have a node for each section of town which feeds a set # of customers. The line that runs from the head end is fiber, the node converts the light from the fiber back to rf which is transfered over the copper clad aluminum, to and amp then an le then a tap into your house, as to why u r only getting one meg your cable providers system may needs some work, im am currently getting 10 meg over my charter cable modem, IM me if you have anymore questions.

They are too cheap and don't want to make the expensive upgrade. You have any idea how much work and manpower and $$$ it would take to dig up all the telephones companies old cable and replace it with fiber optics?

Verizon is investing billions in it's fiber optic network. They are already providing service in parts of Texas, Florida, and other locations, and are in the process of wiring high rises in New York City.

The phone companies realized that it would cost about 1.2 billion dollars per city to install fiber optics. They decided not to install it on all of them when they realized that it would bankrupt all phone companies.

Only the phone companies took it seriously. The cable companies were too busy becoming mega companies to take research seriously.
