South Vietnam was left to defend itself against the North. The North took over the South and now it's back one communist country. We lost 58,000 brave Americans in that nation building effort. Back then it was the evil Communist that had to be stopped at any cost. Now it's the evil terrorist we are fighting in Iraq. In Vietnam the enemy was not known to our forces. The job was really hard. In Iraq the enemy is not known to our forces, it's the same. The terrorist in Iraq will not stand and fight, they do the dirty work behind our backs, just like in Nam. We lost 58 brave Americans in October in Iraq.

The North Vietnamese government agreed to launch all prisoners, which they in no way did. loose elections have been to be held in Vietnam. The President of South Vietnam seen the contract between North Vietnam and the U. S. as a sell out. even though it allowed President Nixon to shop face and produce the warriors domicile. by using 1975, after US troops were pulled out of South Vietnam, the ARVN (military of the Republic of South Vietnam) collapsed and the North Vietnamese moved into Saigon, ending the conflict and finalizing the take over of the South by using the North. Cessation of American casualties.
Eventual restoration of relations.
Vietnam did not go 'Chinese\Communist. They fought the
Chinese for many years... (China, France, Japan, France, America, China...
I may have missed a few occupying countries over the thousand years of fighting foreign troops...
If Roosevelt had lived he may of kept America's promise
to liberate Vietnam as thanks for fighting the Japanese.
We were close allies with the Vietnamese forces fighting the Japanese occupation forces. But to aid in post WW2 recovery of France Truman 'gave' the country back to the French.
Today, after restoring some Vietnam ties, N Korea may well cause even closer ties between former enemies.

It saved the lives of thousands of Americans, and ended a national tragedy.
Brought peace to Vietnam.
And propelled America to create better military technology.
We'd been there from 1962-1973. Eleven years was long enough. The Americans couldn't win, because there were too many rules....like not bombing North Vietnam at times. You can't win a war with one arm tied behind your back. AND, the American people wanted the war to end.
