That was the apex of hypocrisy from FIFA Officials.
It is very simple: during the game with Denmark, Poulsen (Danish defender) committed several fouls on Totti and verbally provoked him. During one of this provocation, Totti reacted and spat on him but he was not sent off from the game.
The game ended 0-0 and the day after a Danish TV brought the incident to the FIFA attention. Totti was disqualified for three games, while Poulsen continued to play without any consequence for his provocation (isn't this remind you something.... World Cup 2006???)
That was one of the "great jobs" Blatter have done during his presidency!!!
The biggest scandal was few days later, when Denmark and Sweden played their last game of the group (same group of Italy and Bulgaria): the ONLY way Italy was going to be excluded from the Quarter Finals, was a tie between Sweden and Denmark... but not ONLY a tie, it should have been 2-2: ANY OTHER score (any tie, win or loss) would have qualified Italy!!!
Guess what? The game ended 2-2!!!! It was a blatant and disgusting accommodated game where FIFA officials ignored all the basic rules of honesty in soccer!
That is often forgot by the French LOSERS who continue to cry about the 2006 World Cup loss.

In the Euro 2004, Francesco Totti was sent off during the Italy vs. Denmark match after spitting on Christian Poulsen. Poulsen was said to have provoked Totti, but Totti still received negative reviews for his performance then, including criticism from the Italian media.

He received a three-match ban, meaning he would miss the next two group matches and the potential Round of 16 match if Italy qualified for it.

" Italy brought in top lawyers Giulia Bongiorno and Mario Gallavotti to defend Totti, arguing that the player had been provoked by Poulsen.

But Uefa's six-man disciplinary committee - led by Spain's Joseph Louis Vilaseca - found Totti guilty"

- Perhaps the consequences would have been different if Totti was more internationally-recognized.

Soccer Mind, you raise some very interesting points. I did notice the absence of Blatter, Platini, and Pele at the awards ceremony when Italy was awarded the World Cup. Blatter, as FIFA President should be obliged to be present and for as long as I can remember, Pele has always made an appearance. The results in Euro 2004 were a little too coincidental in my opinion. But of course nobody would dare raise the spectre of collusion. Such things are only raised when the Italian team is involved. Afterall, there are so many "wise" bigots out there who say that Italians are liars, cheaters, thieves, etc..., so it must be true!! Unfortunately, it has become way too fashionable to disrespect Italians. Now don't get me started on the so-called offside goals scored by Italy against South Korea in the second round of the 2002 World Cup... Why was it only after the World Cup ended that FIFA and the popular media acknowledged and conceded the fact that the referee made the wrong call? But at least we got to enjoy the phony smile on Franz Beckenbauer's face as the Italian team was awarded their medals. It's only natural for Beckenbauer to support the German national team (it's his homeland afterall) and I have no qualms about that. However, Beckenbauer is Germany's FIFA representative and the comments he directed toward the Italian national team vis-a-vis the ongoing soccer scandal in Italy was unjustified. Even Blatter did not outwardly attack the Italian team like Beckenbauer.
