Both these companies used to be separate entities. When they merged, they decided to keep the names somewhat separate due to the customer base for each company. Your basic politics.

HP didn't want to lose the companies that are using Compaq, nor loose the standings that each company has with the different companies that mass buy PC's every few years.

If you owned a company, and merged with a different company, would you risk loosing your customer base to a third company by changing the name?

They started as different companies until Hewlett PAckard bought Compaq. Now Compaq brand is marketed to the business segment while HP is marketed to home users.
