Because the first step is to set poles into the ground that will bear the weight of the entire structure. Usually the 'poles' would be very large so at to be able to hold a large amount of weight.

Generally "pole barns" are made out of used telephone poles, or trees that are set into the ground instead of building a foundation. It's a really quick way to put up a tractor shelter or animal shed. At least that's what we always called pole barns.

a pole barn is basically a peaked roof with no walls. Instead, it uses regular old wooden poles to hold up the roof. There are no walls.

The structure is built with 8 x 8 poles-buried in the ground, instead of footings. It still has rafters and corregated steel walls. Hope that helps.
