My 12 month old son goes to bed with a half full or water sippy cup. I know this needs to be stopped so this is not the question. My problem is we got rid of the binkie back in May and replaced the bottle with a sippy cup full time. He wants to suck when he goes to bed, I have tried taking away the cup and letting him cry and when I come in to check on him, he had the blanket corner/ thumb/ toes or whatever else in his mouth. I dont what him sucking his thumb so what do I do now? Do I even worry about it.

If it's only water, then that's not so bad.... it's when there is juice or milk that you'll get tooth decay. If he REALLY needs it to go to sleep, then fine. But take it out of the crib (or bed) when you go to sleep so it's not in his mouth all night long. Most dentists advise against pacifiers or thumb sucking (in this case, your son is substituting his sippy cup for comfort) after the age of 3, so you've got a while before you have to worry about bucked teeth! Unless you have a real problem with a pacifier... let him have that at bed time. Does he have this same problem at nap?? If not, then he's playin' you!! Yes...those wonderful little people can manipulate starting at about 9 months!!! Bottom line is, whatever you feel comfortable with. Sippy cup with WATER ONLY, a pacifier or thumbs....they are all okay.

Yes, it is fine to put your son in bed with a sippy cup my sister has five kids ans she has just started trying to get her soon off the bottle for about a week now to start drinking out of a cup and he still cries for the bottle but we now call the bottle a cup so yes it is okay for him to suck on a cup while taking a nap it way better than going around sucking on a blanket or thumb.

Putting a baby to bed with a bottle or sippy cup isn't doing the child's teeth any favours. Sucking on something is a natural soothing measure and the baby should eventually grow out of it.

Baby's need to suck. It is good for them. Let him suck his thumb, blanket, whatever. Definitly better for him than a cup in bed.

Child #1 sucked the middle 2 fingers on her right hand until she developed a blister at age 3

Child #2 had a binkie until he was about 15 months

Child #3 is now 15 1/2 months old and sucks the middle 2 fingers on his right hand

There's nothing wrong with them having a sippy cup with water in it. Sucking is a natural soothing method rather it's with a blanket, thumb or sippy cup. I appalued you for taking away the pacifier (I myself do not agree with them, nor condone their use after the child has teeth.) I wouldn't even worry about it. I agree with Kirsten

He is only one. One year olds still have that need to suck. For that matter, many still have it at two.

Your son will grow out of this stage soon enough. Most kids just give up their sippy cups when they are old enough to realize that it is not a 'big kid' thing to do and believe me, every boy I know gets to certain age where it is all about being a 'big boy' and getting rid of the baby stuff becomes a priority. Even the most beloved baby toy suddenly becomes obsolete. Mine always ask me to give away their baby stuff away to other babies.

Honestly what is wrong with letting your son have his sippy cup when he goes to bed. Its a comfort thing for him, and who knows he migh end up getting thirsty during the night. And as along as there is water in the cup, there is really no big deal on making him give up when he goes to bed. Water isnt going to hurt him.

You will find that your son will get rid of the cup when he is ready. Or try giving him the drink before he goes to bed and ask him if you can put it in the fridge until morning :) This worked wonders with my 3 yrs old.

Don't worry too much at that age. Putting the baby to bed with a bottle filled with water is fine. It will not harm his/her teeth in anyway. Don't give Milk or juice, that will cause lots of problems. It is just a comfort to him to do that. If he is doing it at 3 then do things to correct it.
