I just hate things made out of plastic or fiberglass that pass themselves off as being wood. It's like a counterfeit thing. If all you want to do is repaint it you should be able to use any type of paint really. If it had been painted to look like wood grain that is a different matter. I have a wood graining tool but I've never used it yet. This might inspire me to try it out and see how it works. I got it at Home Depot in the faux painting section of the paint department.

Just depends on what you want for looks, the fiberglass door has a more defined woodgrain to it the steel door has a textured steel but not as defined, the good steel doors wont have any wood and be a 20 gauge steel, and be filled up with a polyurathane insulation as will the fiberglass door. the r-value will be about the same for both doors,, the fiberglass door will cost more than the steel door, make sure to get the better ball bearing hinges for either door they will last longer.

If it`s white or tan now, it may have never been painted. Most surrounds can`t withstand UV rays. If left unpainted or stained they will crack. FYI, they can be replaced. If still in question on paint, Ask Sherwin Williams!!!!

It can be painted... but use a primmer first and make sure you do not do this when sun is hitting the door or it will dry faster then you can paint.

Rough it up with a little steel wool (or 120 grit sandpaper) and prime it and paint it.
