I have tried a lot of free virus software and in my opinion alwil avast antivirus is the best. It doesn't take up many resources, it has many different skins you can download, and it catches many viruses and trojans. Go to download.com and type in avast to find it.

Depending on how safe you surf, you may not need an active monitoring app,
such as TeaTimer, which is in Spybot S&D.

By installing the hosts file, IE-SPYADs, SiteAdvisor and WinPatrol,
you will have a pretty good line of defense which won't use up any resources.
this is the link you reqire for the apps http://temerc.com/hddncounttuts.html......

for anti virus use http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
for spyware use ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

And of course a firewall is a must,
tho the XP SP 2 firewall is not sufficient in my opinion.
It only blocks incoming attacks, and should something get thru and that's always possible,
then it can call out to get more things installed or use your machine as a zombie
I'd recommend Zone Alarm, but one of the older versions from here:

Either of the 4.5 versions seem to work best, less buggy than current one

AVG is a very good one grisoft.com. Windows defender has good reviews and is a free download from MS if you have a Windows system.
For firewall I like jetico (version 1, not 2-beta) (jetico.com), it gives very good control, though is a little harder to use than others
For spyware adaware and spybot are good

Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:

Avast:

Anti-Vir:

AOL AntiVirusShield:

AVG:

BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html

Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.clamwin.com/

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not.

Grisoft makes AVG Anti-virus. Its free after you register and is wildly popular in the public school system because its free. I haven't seen anything slip past it yet.

a-cubed is one I have used before, but Caveat Emptor as not everything that is 'free' is written in clean code nor works very well.
