What are the differences between immigrants today and in the 1800's?

1800s-They didn't expect gov't handouts. They worked to better themselves. They learned the language and customs. They waited to enter the U.S.. Most returned when it didn't work out.

Today....they expect gov't handouts. They demand the citizens learn their language and customs. They break the law by arriving here illegally. They cry racism if they are caught and sent back.

many of the immigrants came from Poland, Europe, and Asia, brought by the push/ pull system. Pushed out of the country due to war, persecution and pulled to America by the hopes of finding freedom, and making money for their families. Immigrants were welcomed during the 1800's because there was a need for manual labor, immigrants today are seen as a waste on the governments economy.

Basically nothing. The only real difference is where they come from, though in many cases (like Eastern Europe and China) those are the same, too. Proportionally there are a lot fewer immigrants today than there were in the 1800s, though in raw numbers there are more. In both eras there was a lot of anti-immigrant sentiment among long-term residents of the country, but in both eras immigrants were mainly hardworking people who did jobs that long-term residents didn't want to do.

there are vast and obvious differences, but most important, in the 1800 the US was made up of the 13 colonies with a large undeveloped land mass surrounding it. people did not officially immigrate as we know it today, there was no I.C.E. or D.O.I. instead people settled, occupied, and cultivated the land.
