I have to watch a foreign film for a writing class…the main focus is to do a rhetorical analysis of the film and to focus on the ideologies of that country...any suggestions?

Good Bye Lenin! will give you lots of ideas about a country's ideology, Germany in this case.

A perfect choice would be City of God from Brazil (In Portuguese). It’s an excellent piece of work by Fernando Meirelles who also did Constant Gardner (in English). This director is so talented that it won’t be long before he is a household name. City of God is not only an excellent piece of film making, but it’s an inspirational true story about a boy who grows up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro and manages to make something of himself through his photography. This film would give you plenty of cultural things to write about. It is very violent though so if you can’t handle violence then skip it. It has been compared to Good Fellas and I think its better.

If you would rather do a Drama, I really liked Facing Windows out of Italy. It’s a story about a woman who is bored in her marriage and she fantasizes about a man whose window faces hers across the street. An old man who is a Holocaust survivor comes into her life and she is forced to take care of him and finds that he is able to inspire her and bring meaning into her life. The sound track for this movie is great and the acting is real understated and good.

For fun whimsical romantic comedy - I would pick Amelie (French) or IL Postino (Italian) and I also loved Like Water for Chocolate like someone else mentioned.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

It has an Ancient Chinese setting. With all of the martial arts in it, you won't get bored either. It is a little bit bloody - but not overwhelmingly so. There is also some harsh language in it too. There is even a little bit of romance in it too.

2046
A fantastic movie by some japanese dude.....
Wong Kar Wai's "2046" is a sincere melodrama made up of preposterous conversations — but also lush images and, just occasionally, moments of profundity.
That movie has a decent plot and is easy to write a report on becuase of the intercating storyline.

~Like Water For Chocolate (Mexico)
~Maria, Full of Grace (Columbia)

Both are films about strong female characters that must overcome obstacles to understand their place in life.
