Why not give him the money or gift certificate and let him select the router that best fits his needs.
If you give him $300 then he can also get some carbide bits and maybe some other useful attachments.

It depends on the size of the router you are buying. There are several different brands as listed that are good but keep in mind what he will be doing with it. Once you've decided on the HP you want to purchase, you can then check with maybe Nextag.com or one of those and they will give you different customer reviews and prices.

All these answers are good. Dewalt, Porter Cable, Sears Brand, all great, but Ridgid is also great, and also has a LIFETIME WARRANTY on parts, labor, batteries, etc. I just started switching from all Dewalt to Ridgid, but just because of the warranty though, Dewalt and the others a equally as great. Decisions decisions, Good luck.

stick with Porter Cable or DeWalt
both are great brands and have servied me well at my job as an electrician.
they are pricy but if ya want quality, you have to pay for it.
its better than buying 5 new tools to replace a cheap one in the end too.

bless your little heart for buying your man tools.
porter cable routers are the best. they are expensive but are well worth it.
look around and get a "kit" that has two bases (fixed and plunge) and will accept 1/4" collets and 1/2" collets.
im hoping santy clause will bring me one too
all my best ,
