Im doing a debate with a group for International business class and (lucky us!) we got the side that spits out the reasons Chile should NOT join NAFTA. I cant find anything anywhere for reasons why, and personally I think they should join. Can anyone help?

1. Chile is a member South American Community of Nations (CSN) , it is in South America not North America
2. The goals of CSN is to form a European Union -ike free trade area with a common currency by 2019.
3. Currently CSN is broken into 2 free trade groups Andean and Merosur
4. Even within CSN it is a late adopter and not part of the powerful Merosur free trade area which includes Brazil and Argentina or the Andean free trade region

Finally study the government, history and politics of Chile

1. Pinochet's regime was very bad for Chile, there were numerous human rights violations and much poverty and diplomacy with other SA nations and the US was hurt.
2. although democratic reforms have been put in place with new leaders and economic reform, Chile does not have the diplomatic relations, and economic power say Brazil or Argentina has.

I just can't see a strong economic reason for Chile to be in CSN much less NAFTA.
