Tomorrow we have a happy hour, and if I don't drink alcohol it will be the second time. I got away with it the first time, but this time it will be too weird... I know my close co-workers will make a big deal out of it. Should I just tell my few close co-workers I'm pregnant tomorrow before happy hour? Even though I won't be able to tell my boss until next week (shes on vacation). I think I could trust them to not tell anyone at work.

I have to go to this happy hour b/c it is in honor of one of my close co-workers who is leaving. I would not go if it were for someone else.
Also, my co-workers know that I drink (before I was pg), so it will be weird for me not to. I'm only 23! I was in college last year!

Hmmmmm..... I've worked in offices for over 30 years, and something like that.... I would never tell a coworker before notifying the boss. Nobody is that trustworthy.

You could be right.... YOUR coworkers might be super ultra special people. But what if you're wrong?

Your boss could get pretty upset hearing this through the grapevine. If you get picked on, fired, laid off, or whatever the consequences might be... those other people will say, "sorry" and you will be the one to suffer.

Hush until the boss gets back.

If you really don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet....fake drinking!! Get a virgin Bloody Mary or fruity something. Many, many women postpone making the announcement until after the 1st trimester anyway. You could also beg off that you are trying to lose weight and we all know booze is a biggie when it comes to empty calories

I would not tell your co workers yet & tell your boss first when she gets back. It could only cause problems in the future if she findsout through the grapevine thinking you're hiding it from her. Besides that why would you wanna go to happy hour while pg? May just be me but I don't get it.

Most people usually tell private information to friends that they are emotionally close to before mere aquantancies, even if that aquantince is a boss. This is a social norm understood by the great majority of people.

I think if you trust them and it is only a few people it is OK. If they know then they will probably not draw attention to your abstinence from alcohol. Just make sure you tell your boss soon, too.

It's best to notify your boss first, so she can take measures to arrange for any temporary replacement while you're on maternity leave. As far as happy hour goes, just don't drink any alcohol. You can give your colleagues whatever excuse you want, like you just don't feel like drinking.

yes! being pregnant is a big deal and family and friends should be the first to know ,but they also say that talking about the baby before the third month is bad luck

You don't have to tell your boss yet. You may never have to tell her because when you start "showing" she will know. Probably by that time everyone at work will know.

Yes, it is ok! Since she was on vacation it shouldn't really matter. Just tell her as soon as she gets back, before she hears it from someone else!

You tell whomever you wish to as you feel comfortable telling them. But your boss is someone that needs to know. Everyone else is whom you want to have know.

So tell your boss soon, but don't feel you have to tell her before anyone else.
