addresses. Such as com. gov. edu. etc, A family friend recently sent us an update on his new email address and it was really weird. Am I misinformed or just out of date?

Kind of both. While com, net, gov, org, mil, and edu are the most common, there have always been others. Every country as a domain, such as us for the USA. Also every state of the USA as a domain the same as their mail code (mi for Michigan, etc). Those have been around for years - just not often used.

Plus recently ICANN, the group the registers domain names, added several new one. Do not recall them at the moment.

So your friends e-mail is using either one of the rarely used old ones, or one of the recently added. So not sure if you are misinformed or out of date. But one of them. (LOL)
