Commercial eggs are laid by chickens which are eventually killed for food when they stop laying eggs. So you'd be supporting the eventual death of the chickens. But if you can get them from a farm where they swear they won't kill the chickens when they stop laying, go ahead.
Chickens lay eggs whether the eggs are fertilized or not. If the eggs aren't fertilized, there's no way they can become chickens. So if there's no rooster around, you can eat the eggs since otherwise they'll just lie around and rot. But if they're fertilized, yeah, I guess they could become chicks. But you wouldn't have a rooster unless you WANTED chicks, since fertilized eggs have a gross bloody spot in them where the embryo starts to form--yuck.
So, here's the breakdown: if you can guarantee the chickens won't be turned into chicken soup after they quit laying eggs, and the eggs aren't fertilized, then you can eat the eggs. But if they're fertilized--gross. And commercial eggs are probably out, if you're into animal rights. If you're at a farm for breakfast, go ahead and eat the eggs, but otherwise, you might want to skip them.

Which came first, Derek? The chicken or the egg??? Who needs a profile of a vegetarian when we have one of Alfred Hitchcock?

Only you can decide the correct choice for your personal dilemma.
This answer would be the same if a woman (for it is a woman's dilemma) asked me "should I be prolife?"

i think commercialised eggs are sterile, so no matter how long you try to hatch them, they won't turn into small little chicks. :)
but i've a question. don't plants live too? doesnt eating veggies/fruits equal to eating a previously-alive creature too? ok just curious. ;p
