Plumbers...I need you?

Question

I have a toilet running problem. The toilet runs, but doesn't have any flushing issues at all, no leaking, no run over. In fact, the handle doesn't stick or anything - it just kind of quietly runs.

Without seeing it, what suggestions do you have for what it could be and if it is possible for me to take a look and perhaps fix it on my own (aaakkk!).

ok...what is a flapper, and how do i replace it? isnt it in water?

Are there different sizes, or is there one universal size?

One more answer, it's the flapper, an inexpensive part and available at any home store, or even your local drug store.
Usually under five dollars.
It's an easy fix, turn off the water, drain the tank, and mop up the remaining water. Pull off the old flapper, and it's best to use dishwashing gloves as they tend to have a slimy film on them. Nothing serious, just old rubber wearing out.
The instructions are on the flapper package, and just by looking, you can see, what needs to be done.
You may have to adjust the chain to the right level, but thats easy too. Just take it step by step, and all should go well.
Once the new one is in place, turn the water back on, and your problem is over.

Sounds like the flapper needs replacement. They are one of those $5.00 items that are necessary, and they are made so cheaply that you have to keep replacing them during the life of your toilet. If they get the slightest bend in them, water is allowed into the bowl, causing that noise. It's a do-it-yourself thing. Just draw the current one (or shut off the toilet's water line, unhook the flapper and bring it to the store) since there are different models that may not be compatible with your toilet. Good luck! in the terminology I can easily explain to you - it is the 'Black thingy at the bottom of the tank' don't worry about the water it is clean water so you can safely stick your hand in it. what may help you, is to turn off the water supply down at the back (or behind) of the toilet (looks like a tap) then flush the toilet to drain the tank. once this is done you can remove the flapper and take it to the nearest or convenient hardware store to match it up.

Hi, yourt toilet is likely leaking from the top instead from the bottom. Open the cover and look at the water getting into the vertical tube at the surface. The problem is likely to be an adjustment of the level of the big rubber ball ( float). You might want to just turn it a half turn, or alternatively, adjsut the float screw on top of the valve. most likely the flapper which is connected to the opposite end of flush handle.you could also have a bad fill valve that is not shutting off the water once the tank is filled. both are simple fixes.

might be the flapper, but 80% of the time its the float....take lid off and see if the water is running over into the 1" tube that is sticking up? if it is then take and bend the small metal arm that holds the big round float on the end of it and bend it down toward the water.....tip, easier done while flushing the water out....

I suspect that the flapper valve in the bottom of the tank is leaking. They can be easily replaced. Parts are available at any hardware store for less than $20.00.

Before you buy or adjust anything, Clean the area around the opening where the Flapper fits when closed- sometimes sediment builds up and allows it to leak. Clean if off. then see if it leaks.
