VHS tapes or Video Camera DV tapes? VHS tapes can be recorded from a VCR to a Digital Video Recorder if they're not copy protected then the DVD file can be downloaded to your computer. DV camera files usually are downloaded by the program that came with your camera but the camera can be linked to your computer with a FireWire cable and downloaded directly through Explorer if you don't have a program.

Start by purchasing a TV capture card to install into your PC. They make both internal and USB cards. The card should come with software to be able to capture and edit the picture from the card. They start at about $150 dollars and go up. Be sure to check the system requirments to assure it will work on your PC.

Attach your VCR to the computer, and play your tape. Start the software and it will record the video onto your computer. It takes 1 hour to record 1 hour of tape. So if you have a lot of tapes it is going to take a while.

Once you have the video recorded, you can use the editing the software if needed to edit it (cut commercials, etc.) Resave to computer. This can take 1 hour per hour of video (again).

Note that captured video files are HUGE. So you will need to be sure you have LOTS of free hard drive space to hold the videos. Or you will need to copy them off to CD or DVD after you finish each tape. If you want the CD or DVD to be playable on regular DVD players, not just computers, you have to run it trhough a conversion process as you are burning the DVD. This can take 1 hour for each hour of video (again).

But once done, you will have a nice collection of CDs or DVDs to watch.

If you filmed something on your camera on tape, you have to extrat to your computer through a program. usually you could connect your camera to ur computer with a usb cable. You could use windows movie maker which comes with windows or download some other programs.

If its regular tapes you play on ur tv, then you need a special peice of hardware that links the tape to the computer
