No, they cannot. I know that when I took AP Lit in HS, there were many people in the course who never took the examination itself. Though it may seem silly (why take a college-level course if your not going to take the test to at least try and get the credit) there are still some pluses to it. It looks good on college applications and some schools will grant exemptions from courses (though, not credit) for simply taking the course. For instance, all students at my college who took AP Literature in HS (whether they took, passed or failed the exam) are all exempt from ENG 101 and go straight to 102.

Well, that can vary locally. My county is forcing all of its students who take AP classes to take AP tests. Some school divisions may do this. But yours may not. I would go check it out with the school board in your area or the student's school.

I don't believe so. When I took AP Calc a kid in my class didn't want to take it (and didn't) even though his mother (she worked for the school) kept bugging him to. ..It wasn't mandatory. I would recommend taking it though.. the score usually determines how much credit one gets in college for it, and not having to take it in college because you have the AP credits is GREAT!

It isn't an absolute requirement, because taking the test costs over $100--ETS probably puts pressure on schools to make their students pay and take the test, after completing the course, just to make their profits grow even bigger.

I don't think you an be forced to, but it's a good idea; otherwise colleges will wonder why the class shows up on the transcript and not the testing records. They might assume he/she did very poorly and just cancelled the score.

it depends on the high school. some schools expect you to take the test in order to get credit for the class, but it isn't always necessary.
