Because the most used letters are in the center, the least on the outskirts, thats why Q and Z are in the corners. The current keyboard style is called QWERT.

The people who made the keyboard had to do a lot of research on what letters are used the most in the English language, and what fingers have the most flexibility/streghth. Thats why letters are placed in the positions they are, even though it is seemingly random.
(for example, the letter z, which is hardly used, is placed in the bottom left corner, where only the pinky can reach it; can you imagine how long it would take if you had to type everything with your two pinkys)

These new techniques, and some famous typing competitions, demonstrated the worth of the new machine and led to greater acceptance. However, proficient typists easily caused the typewriter mechanisms to jam.

To address this, Sholes had an ingenious idea. He discovered that many English words contained combinations of letters next to each other in the alphabet, for instance ABBey, DEFEct, HIGh, etc., which occurred frequently. With the help of a teacher called Amos Desmore, Sholes determined the combinations that occurred most frequently, split them and placed the component letters far away on the keyboard of his machine. And this is how the QWERTY layout was born. (The layout is referred to as “QWERTY” because of the arrangement of the keys in the upper row).

Because they are laid out to be more accessible when actually typing words

NB

Because of different letter usage in their language the French use an AZERTY not QWERTY keyboard, and other languages also have different layouts.

Try using one in Turkey, it's a nightmare, most main keys are the same but not all.

incredibly, there are various layouts, QWERTY is basically the main conventional. The QWERTY format replaced into designed so as that a typewriter does no longer jam as certainly. If I remember wisely, it is designed so as that many of the letters regularly happening next to one yet another in a be conscious are no longer close to one yet another on the row of keys (as in the main that strikes the ribbon in a typewriter, no longer the keyboard key). The layout worked so properly that it grew to alter into the norm for typewriters, so whilst they presented be conscious processors and desktops, that replaced into how a typist typed. changing meant that typists mandatory to re-study typing, and that replaced into basically no longer useful. the different conventional US keyboard format is the Dvorak, that's designed so as that letters that are regularly happening mutually are going to be typed with alternating arms, and if it is with a similar hand, with a distinctive finger. it quite is meant to enhance the fee of a typist, and thanks to that, it replaced into no longer very conventional on typewriters, because of the fact the device basically could no longer shop up. in certainty, because of the fact human beings do no longer form in alphabetical order, it would not make experience to have the letters on the keyboard in that order.

The design of the keyboard is meant to be egronomic, in that the keys are placed in the space that is easiest for us to use and remember. Trust me, there is a logic behind it. Afterall, how long would it take you to re-learn to type if the keys were rearanged in alphabetical order?

It would make to much sense to do it that way. I think they did it so the most commonly used ones would be in the center of the keyboard to make it easier to type.

I think it's to put the letters used most often where they're easiest to type. (Think about where the q and the z are, for example - it's hard to stretch that pinkie to those spots - so aren't you glad we don't need either of those letters very often?)
