PS2 requires a memory card to save games, yes.

Hard drives hadn't come out yet for game systems.

Yes for the PlayStation 2 a Memory Card is require to save your games. If you have a PS2 hard drive you can save it there but you can`t load it but is good to store it in case you get your Memory Card mess up.

the hard drives that were offered when the station first come out are nolonger in production, and even if you find one if you have a newer model system, its not even compateble. so what do you do? you go out to gamestop and buy a PLAYSTATION 2 MEMORY CARD not ps1 card ( witch are needed to save ps1 games if played on 2 for example ff7 cannot be saved with a ps2 card) PS2 ( and i caps it because i was given a ps1 card once as a gift cause it was cheaper and it still said playstation on it)

Well, u can play your games even if u dont have a memory card but u cant save your games, so yes u need one if u are planning to save a game, but u dont have to buy it in order to play your games.

P.S. You can go to these web sites if u want to buy a memory card.

X-box became avaliable after 2002, while PS2 came arround 2000, so yes, if you want to make "progress". Otherwise not neccessary, but you should. lol
