I have all the jumpers in the correct places and can find the drive in the device manager. When I troubleshoot it says that the device is working properly but it won't show up in "my computer." What is wrong??

How can you allocate the drive when you have no access to it?

Yes. XP will format partition but only if you have access to the drive. The drive is not shown in "My Computer". It shows up in the device manager. The PC knows it's there. but not in "My Computer."

You have to format your new drive. The program i recommend is Data lifeguard tools. It comes with most western digital drives. You can also get it for free from there webpage www.westerndigital.com
it should be under support. It will scan for new drives and ask if you want to format them. It is a lot faster than the default windows formating. It may give you an error basically saying that you get no tech support from them if you don't have a western digital drive but the program works fine.

What brand of drive is it? You may need to use the manufacturers drive utility to set it up so that win xp recognizes... If the drive isn't partitioned properly windows will not see it.
