I'm a dance teacher, and at my studio, there is a classical class, and a lyrical class. The main difference according the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus is classical ballet is technical dancing that is performed for the sake of movement. You see ballet numbers that, really don't have a storyline neccessarily, but the dance is simply meant to be that: a dance. Whereas, with lyrical, you are dancing for a different reason, not just the sake of physical movement. You are dancing to tell a story, or a feeling. There is more depth in lyrical, but it can be argued that something is lost in the transition from classical to lyrical, because lyrical tends to lose technical emphasis.

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer's movements attempts to show the meaning of the music.
Lyrical dance is a unique dance form in that it has no particular history. It is the coming together of ballet, jazz, and modern, for the most part and is performed to music with lyrics. The lyrics of a song are the driving force for the inspiration of the movement. Choreography is often emotional, gripping, and delicate all at the same time. Lyrical dancers at Breaking Pointe will learn performance quality through expression and unique choreography.

I believe that lyrical dancing is acting out the words of a song while keeping its beat.
