um.. no you can't be president.. and you fail to see a little difference between our civil war and the iraq situation.. IRAQ HAD A DICTATOR! he wasn't killing people for a good cause! HE WAS MURDERING PEOPLE FOR THE FUN OF IT! the intelligence of people just baffles me.. During our civil war we were still a democracy pal.. Abraham Lincoln was not killing people for the heck of it! and democracy has shown throughout history to be successful.. Iraq has become a democracy and will go much farther than it ever would have under a dictator! you people make me sick

SOME PEOPLE AMAZE ME! YOU THINK THIS WAY BECAUSE OF THE STABILITY OF THE COUNTRY NO DOUBT RIGHT! HE LOVED TO LET HIS BOYS RAPE LITTLE GIRLS AND GAS THE KURDS ,AND PUT PEOPLE IN WOOD CHIPPERS! THROW PEOPLE OFF OF BUILDINGS NOT FAR ENOUGH TO KILL THEM ONLY MAME THEM TO THEN EXECUTE THEM ,TORTURE PEOPLE FOR HOURS ETC.. NOW DO YOU THINK THEY ARE BETTER OFF? GO ASK THE NORTHERN KURDS WHO HAVE A NORMAL LIFE NOW OR THE SOUTHERN AREAS RETURNING TO NORMAL OPERATIONS!

Hi,
You have raised a very pertinent question...
The way that I see this quagmire is that, there were far less assaults on human life and civil unrest than there currently is today.
The scenes that I view in the news media depicts utter caos and destruction.
There is unprecedented corruption by, Iraqi police and mass murder that is off the scale.
There is no way that any rational, compassionate person can perceive a positive out of this mess.

Pardon me for saying but, Saddam must have been some kind of leader to keep all of these other factions at bay that are now otherwise, invading the region and taking hold...
I wonder who will care for and support all of the civilian casualties who were unfortunately maimed as a result of this occupation.

I must commend you on the fact that you had the foresight to request that persons responding to this question give contemplation to their response.
I have been a member of this on-line forum since the 13th...
I have noticed that there are a lot of people who try to answer complex questions without true knowledge.
Though venting anxieties on line can be a relief and fun, one must be intellectually competent to have a positive impact.
I joined this forum as a means to try to harmoniously communicate with other Americans rather than perpetuate idiosyncrasies.

If I were living in Iraq under Saddam's reign, I would be very glad to see him gone...no more terrorism regarding all the people he doesn't like. I know of a family who are Christian Iraqis who were faced with either joining Saddam's army (and being shot) or taking the chance to escape. They did the latter successfully and ended up in the U.S. I don't feel we should continue to stay, as the various splits in the country politically will continue to fight as long as the earth is alive, I'm afraid. These people have fought forever, and will apparently continue to do so. I don't like seeing our men and women killed day after day now that our initial goal has been met - getting Saddam out of power.

Let's see, over 600,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed since the start of the war over 3 years ago and Saddam came no where near killing that many of his own people over the last 3 years of his reign. I think the only way to find the real answer is to ask the Iraqi people: one kurd, one Shia, and one Sunni.

you don't wanna hear bull answers ......... but you still gonna hear the truth .......... and anyone with the other half of the brain knows this is the truth ........... yes seriously is Iraq a better place without Saddam ?........... no ......... brutal as he is ....... he couldn't survive more than a decade of us and UN sanctions without the support of the majority. yes ......... he killed his own people ........ but that was a civil war ........ what do you do when a minority of the population tries to overthrow the government of the land. in the us ......... we have our civil war ............ and nutcase like the branch davidians too ........ we killed our own people too ....... what else could we do? ........... let them overthrow the government.

this war is not our war. the majority of the Iraqi wanted us out. as of this day 2783 us soldiers lost their life ........ BRINGING DEMOCRACY TO THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ! enough of this bullshit .............. THE MAJORITY OF IRAQI WANTED US OUT ........ IS THIS NOT DEMOCRACY

the one who's making me sick is you ......... DEMOCRACY ........ what kind of democracy are you talking about? suppose a free and democratic Iraq decides to vote in an Islamic fundamentalist government ........ can you handle that ?........... it's your kind of democracy that got us into Nam ........... and into another bloody mess now.

Well lets see, under Saddam, peoples kids were forced into the military at 13,you would get killed if your beliefs were different than Saddams, if a man accused his wife of adultery, she would be tortured, raped by Saddams men, and hung from goal posts at soccer stadiums, and oh yea, Olympic athletes would get tortured for poor performance in the games. Not to mention the chance of being gassed by him. The Liberal bunch who is always preaching hugs and love evidently supports this behavior.

No. Because since Saddam went and the American invaded, there has been a higher count of deaths with both Americans and Iraqi civilians. Saddam Hussain was a git and loved killing people, but since he went, the deaths have increased, anyway. So no, Iraq isn't a better place now. It's just much worse than what it was previously. And because of that it's also ruining the rest of the world.

I don't think so. Saddam may not have been a great guy, but he had the same discourse for terrorists as we do, now they run amuck in the streets of Iraq with little control. Many people blame Saddam for the murders of an estimated 1 million people in his 23 years of power. We have only been there for a little over 4 years and over 600,000 Iraqis have died, and I'm not saying that our soldiers killed them. They have been killed by the terrorists that have come into Iraq, which is because of our occupation. So I lean towards they would have been better off if we would have just left them alone!

Yes. The only reason he was "president" for so long is because he KILLED anyone who didn't vote for him. He is insane and the whole world is better off without him.

The world needs to thank the USA for that!

WAY too early to tell. If the ultimate dictator that we install or they naturally end up with is benevolent and less psychotic, maybe. "Democracy" in Iraq will kill far more people than Saddam if left to its own devices...
