We feed our fish 3 times a day but they are always digging in the rocks and plastic trees for extra food. I am glad they do this personally because it helps keep the tank clean, but I wonder if it is healthy for them or if I am underfeeding them.

All answers that are serious are very much appreciated.

God Bless.

Yes. In the wild, fish constantly graze for food. In aquarium, they're sitll acting out their natural behavior. And if food is hitting the bottom of the aquarium, you may want to cut back on the amount that you are feeding them. Once the food hits the bottom of the tank, it starts to break down and cause water chemistry issues.

Usually feeding fish in the AM and again in the PM is sufficient. Your guppies are searching for left-over food in the rocks and plastic trees. You have to be careful to not over-feed them, however, as this can change the make-up of the water and take the needed oxygen out of it. As your fish shop owner will be able to tell you, you need to test the water in your aquarium(s) on a regular basis to see how it is. It's an inexpensive way to keep your fish healthy.

Yes. Guppies love to pick food out of the bottom because they are curious like cats. Cats tend to feed on dog food because Jurassic park is on at 9:00 P.M. I was born on a Saturday night but September is a month that I don't care for. I hope this was a good enough answer for you.

I sounds like you are over feeding. Fish will tend to eat as much as you give them. They are likely eat missed food off the bottom. Cut back to once a day no more than they can eat in 2-3 minutes.

PS- Note that guppy are omnivores, and will feed off algae on the gravel, plants, and equipment. They won't, however eat the slimy stuff off the glass.
